Residence pool, private pool or spa: what are we talking about?
Behind the word “pool” lie three very different realities. A residence pool is a shared pool, used by the holidaymakers of the building or complex. A private indoor pool is reserved for the occupants of a single chalet or apartment. Finally, the spa area (hot tub, sauna or hammam depending on the property) is designed above all for relaxation. What it includes and whether children can use it vary from one establishment to another: it is better to check before you book.
How to spot a rental with a pool
The safest reflex is still to read the property description: a photo of a pool in a listing does not always tell you whether the pool is private or shared, or whether it is open during your stay. If in doubt, ask our advisers: before you commit, they will tell you whether the residence has a pool, what type and under what conditions it can be used.
Season, opening hours and access conditions
The opening of a pool in the mountains varies with the season and from one residence to another. Indoor pools are most useful in winter, when a swim rewards a day on the pistes. In summer, an outdoor pool, where there is one, offers another option, with dates and hours specific to each establishment.
Before booking, ask whether access is included in the rental, whether you need to book a time slot and what rules apply: swimming cap, children’s-only hours, minimum age. With young children, also ask about the pool’s safety features (barrier, alarm, cover or shelter) and about supervision of swimming. To go further, our guide Family holiday in the mountains details the criteria that matter when travelling with children.
Pool or spa: well-being after skiing or hiking
For many holidaymakers, the pool is part of a broader moment of relaxation. In high-end chalets, the wellness area may include a spa, a sauna or a pool. Our guide Luxury chalets with spa explains what makes the difference and what to check on each listing, because the facilities change from one property to another.
In summer, the mountains are also ideal for restorative stays: gentle walks, high-altitude lakes, treatments. Find our ideas in Wellness and spa in summer.
What to check before you book
Is the pool private or shared?
It is very common for swimming pools to be shared, particularly in residential complexes. Be sure to check beforehand.
Will it be open on the dates of your stay, and at what times?
For maintenance or servicing reasons, it is advisable to check the opening dates in advance.
Is access included in the rental or paid separately?
Generally, the rental cost includes access to the swimming pool for our properties located in residences that have one.
Is it heated, indoor or outdoor?
For a stay in the mountains, where temperatures can be much lower than in cities, it is important to be aware of these criteria.
What safety features protect children?
The swimming pools available in the residences are equipped with all mandatory safety features; however, it is worth noting what additional measures may be in place for your children, should the need arise.
Does the property offer other wellness facilities (sauna, hot tub)?
Some of our high-end properties also offer amenities such as a sauna, hammam, or jacuzzi. You can find details regarding these features on the property listing.
